A theoretical framework of existential coherence is presented, explaining how health, quality of life (QOL), and the ability to function were originally created and developed to rehabilitate human life from an existential perspective. Aaron Antonovsky did focus on the interesting subject of how an individual can stay healthy. He developed the model of salutogenesis, which he put in contrast to pathogenesis. Despite of his criticism of the latter concept used by the medical community, it was important for him to stress, that salutogenesis was supposed to serve as an addition to and not a replacement for pathogenesis. He saw the river as the river of life and wrote in his book “Unraveling the Mystery of Health: How People manage Stress and stay well”: “Contemporary western medicine is likened to a well organized heroic technologically sophisticated effort devotedly engaged in this task and often quite well rewarded, of pulling drowning people out of a raging river. The editor of the journal has taken the initiative to develop glossaries on central concepts in health promotion. The aim of this paper is to explain and clarify the key concepts of the salutogenic theory sense of coherence coined by Aaron Antonovsky. Abstract: Aaron Antonovsky wrote extensively, although disjointedly, about the roles of culture in salutogenesis. This paper provides a synopsis of his work in this arena. A literature review identified those of his English language writings in which culture was a subject, and relevant text segments were analysed using an inductive followed by a deductive method.
Research has pursued salutogenic and narrative approaches to deal with questions about how everyday settings are constitutive for different health practices.
